The world of work has been changing dramatically since the late 1980s. In addition to the structural shift from an industrial to a service-based society, it was above all the privatisation of state-owned enterprises in the GDR after 1990 that brought about profound changes to the working and living lives of many people. There has been much debate about the outcomes and consequences of these changes.

‘Development rather than liquidation’ – with this slogan, the party Bündnis 90/Die Grünen criticised the consequences of the Treuhandanstalt’s policies for East Germany’s economy.
ON DISPLAY:
- A major employer in Potsdam was the Reichsbahn Repair Works (RAW). In 1999, the workshops were closed after 161 years. A digital centre is now to be built on part of the site.
